HYY’s Development Cooperation Week 2014 – Education and Development

The Development Cooperation Week will be organised on the campuses of the University of Helsinki on 13-17 Oct. The National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) coordinates the Development Cooperation Week, which is organised in eight student unions across Finland at the same time. This year, the theme of the week is education and development and the week focuses on this theme from the viewpoint of equality, crisis areas and the future, for example. During the week, you can also learn about culture jamming and life coaching.

The opening of the Development Cooperation Week will be organised at the student market in the main building of the University of Helsinki at 12noon on 13 Oct. A yet unconfirmed speaker will give the opening speech of the Development Cooperation Week in a tent classroom surrounded by art and coffee. Fair Trade Café business cards will be launched in the event. On Tuesday, 14 Oct, Post-2015 expert panel will be organised at Kaisa building in cooperation with Aalto University. The panel will address the UN’s future development goals from the perspective of education. On Tuesday evening, the development cooperation sitsit will be organised and a three-day Ciné Developé documentary festival will begin.

On Wednesday, the non-governmental organisation CMI (Crisis Management Initiative) founded by President Martti Ahtisaari will present its activities in conflict resolving in crisis areas in the facilities of Think Corner at the University of Helsinki. On Thursday, we have delicious breakfast with specialists in the field of development cooperation in Cajsa Hall at the New Student House and during the day, events spread to Kumpula and Viikki campuses.

On Friday, Helsinki Think Company will organise a workshop about cultural harassment and subvertising. In the English coaching workshop, we are introduced to a coaching approach and learn how the connection with another person is formed. On Friday night, the Development Cooperation Week ends in a party!

ACADEMIC DINNER PARTY

On Tuesday evening Development Cooperation Week will switch for a party mood: Dress up in your finest and come to enjoy the traditional Finnish academic dinner party at Alina hall!  The dinner party is organized together with the Student Union of Aalto University so multidisciplinary atmosphere is guaranteed. Take your friends and have fun in the spirit of Development Cooperation Week!

The dinner party costs 12 € (voluntary support payment 18 €). Includes three course meal accompanied with wine, singing, toasts, shots and a lot of fun! The party will start at 6 pm and the program will start at 6:30 pm.

ICT FOR DEVELOPMENT – WORKSHOP

Kumpula campus, Physicum D104, Thu 16th October at 14:00 - 16:00

Transforming education through ICT and with ICT in developing countries. The workshop reflects on the experience Andrés Moreno gathered while working in Mozambique under the MFA program STIFIMO, the largest development program of Finland at that time. Intense collaboration with local universities was sought to revamp teacher training. In he workshop students will analyze the situation and propose alternative plans.

 

INTRODUCTION TO COACHING – WORKSHOP

Coaching is a process that aims at developing, challenging, supporting and capacitating people in order to reach their full potential both professionally and personally with questions and other techniques.

In the workshop you will learn about coaching in general and get familiar with a powerful coaching technique that you will get to use in practice already during the workshop. You will also learn what rapport is and how you can use it to connect with different people. This workshop is for anyone who is interested in getting more tools to help others and to get to know themselves better. It is also an excellent kick-start for someone who is interested in professional coaching. This is a fun and relaxed workshop!
